Michael Zemp is the new director of the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) Michael Zemp was nominated by an international search commission and took over his new function from Wilfried Haeberli by the first of May 2010. Wilfried Haeberli had been the Director of the Permanent Service on the Fluctuations of Glaciers (PSFG) from 1983 to 1986 and then became the first Director of WGMS, which was created by the merger of the PSFG and the Temporary Technical Secretariat for the World Glacier Inventory (TTS/WGI). Since 2006, Michael Zemp has led the operational management of WGMS with internationally recognized success. His scientific background is in environmental geoscience and especially in glaciology. His technical background specifically concerns database management, remote sensing and geoinformatics. Michael Zemp has years of experience with related international organizations and programs. Besides scientific analyses of long-term glacier observations, he was also active in generalizing scientific results for a wide international public. Furthermore, Michael Zemp played an essential role in the building of the new structure for the Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers (GTN-G) within the UN-related Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS/GCOS). The WGMS is a service of the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS/IUGG). Its lead and coordinating office is funded by GCOS Switzerland (Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss) and by the Department of Geography, University of Zurich, Switzerland.
