data exploration

  . General remarks
.
WGMS provides standardized observations on changes in mass, volume, area and length of glaciers with time (Fluctuations of Glaciers), as well as statistical information on the distribution of perennial surface ice in space (World Glacier Inventory). In addition, information on special events (e.g., surges, calving instabilities, ice avalanches, lake outbursts) is available. All data and information is freely available for scientific and educational purposes. The use requires acknowledgement to the WGMS and/or the original investigators and sponsoring agencies according to the available meta-information.
.
Fluctuations of Glaciers

In order to get an overview on available glacier fluctuation series or to search for information of a specific glacier, use the WGMS MetaData Browser. The MetaData Browser allows you to directly download minimal data series of glacier changes together with corresponding survey and reference years. Full measurement details for individual observation series as well as larger datasets can be ordered by email. The same email can be used to report corrections and new data.

The following metadata is based on database version wgms-fog-2013-11 covering observation periods up until 2010/11. Note: the location coordinates are given as reported to the WGMS and may not exactly match the glacier position.

Use the interactive MetaData Browser to browse available data for individual glaciers, geographical regions, and measurement types (i.e., front variation, glaciological mass balance, geodetic thickness change):

Correct viewing of the MetaData Browser requires a recent version of your web browser and of Adobe Flash Player installed.

World Glacier Inventory

For direct access to the World Glacier Inventory (WGI), please visit our mirror-site hosted by the US National Snow & Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

Glacier Special Events

Information on glacier-related special events such as surges, claving activities, rock falls onto glaciers, lake outbursts, ice avalanches, eruptions of glacier-clad volcanoes or related protection work including prospection and scientific analysis are regularly reported and documented in a corresponding Chapter in the Fluctuations of Glaciers publication series.
