  . General remarks
.
WGMS provides standardized observations on changes in mass, volume, area and length of glaciers with time (Fluctuations of Glaciers), as well as statistical information on the distribution of perennial surface ice in space (World Glacier Inventory). In addition, information on special events are available, such as surges, calving instabilities, rock falls onto glaciers, lake outbursts, ice avalanches, eruptions of glacier-clad volcanoes or related protection work including prospection and scientific analysis.
.
Fluctuations of Glaciers
In order to get an overview on available information on glacier fluctuations or to search for specific glaciers, you can:

(a) check in the following Excel table (including glacier fluctuations up to the year 2009):

(b) use the interactive map below (including mass balance data up to the year 2009):

This map can be displayed in GoogleMaps:
    MB at WGMS!

(c) or explore the meta-data file in GoogleEarth* (including glacier fluctuations up to the year 2009):

Note: the location coordinates are given as reported to the WGMS and may not exactly match the glacier position.

  • If not, you may download this software from GoogleEarth.
  • Click the WGMS_FoG_2009_v2.kmz above and save the file locally.
  • Make sure the file name ends with .kmz (not .zip).
  • If not, rename the file to WGMS_FoG_2009_v2.kmz.
  • Start GoogleEarth.
